To maximize the effectiveness of the tutoring session, the tutor, parent/guardian, and student must read and discuss the following information at the beginning of the first tutoring session. Both the student and the tutor have important responsibilities which will enable the tutoring session to address the student’s specific needs. A clear understanding of the responsibilities involved in tutoring is the first step toward a successful tutoring experience.
Goals of Tutoring
- To assist students in becoming independent learners
- To identify student’s areas of concern
- To assist students in reaching a higher level of competence in their particular subject area
- To assist students in becoming active in the learning process
- To aid in the development of a positive approach toward learning
- To provide a supportive and encouraging environment where learning takes place at the student’s pace
The goals of tutoring are reached by:
- Creating an atmosphere of trust and support between tutor and student
- Assessment of student’s current level of skill and background knowledge in the subject
- Ongoing assessment of student’s ability to inform instruction
- Practice of new learning during tutoring session and between sessions
Student Responsibilities
- Attending all scheduled tutoring sessions
- Arrive on time to all scheduled tutoring sessions
- Contacting the tutor no less that 24 hours in advance if unable to attend a scheduled session
- Students who miss a scheduled session without notifying their tutor will be marked as a “no show” and no refund will be given
- Students who have two “no shows” or repeated cancellations may be dropped from the tutor’s schedule
- Bringing necessary materials to tutoring sessions, including white board, markers, eraser, and laptop and headphones if necessary
- Participating actively in all aspects of the tutoring session
- Knowing the tutor’s name and how to contact the tutor
Tutor Responsibilities
- Attending all scheduled tutoring sessions
- Arriving on time (preferably early) to all scheduled tutoring sessions
- Contacting the student no less than 24 hours in advance should a session need to be rescheduled
- Sessions should be rescheduled within 3 days.
- Waiting at least 15 minutes of a 50-minute session or 10 minutes of a 25-minute session before marking student as a “no show”
- Using examples to demonstrate new concepts and providing opportunities for practice
- Knowing each student’s name and how to contact the student’s parents
- Confirming the next scheduled session prior to the end of the current session
